Koen Wessing – Indelible Images

Tasks: Production, Curatorial Assistance, Technical Consultant, Montage, Retouching (comissioned by Paradox // http://www.paradox.nl)
Location: Centro Gabriela Mistral, Santiago, Chile

Koen Wessing was and remains on of the Netherlands most important icons photo journalism. Wessing started as freelance photographer in 1963. In his early years he became renowned for picturing the May protest of 1968 in Paris, the occupation of the Maagdenhuis of the University in Amsterdam in 1969, and later the military coup in Chili in 1973. Later Wessing produced more uniquely powerful work in Ireland, Guinea-Bissau in West Africa, Nicaragua, El Salvador, China and Kosovo.
Seen retrospectively, his work from South America probably received the most attention throughout the years. His images of the 1973 coup in Chile against the progressive government of Salvador Allende, as well the insurrection in Nicaragua and his reportage of the massacre during the funeral of Archbishop Romero in El Salvador, were all striking and alarming. His engaged work in these countries made him an internationally renowned photographer.
Shortly before his death in February Wessing strongly felt the responsibility to show his 1973 work in Santiago de Chile. On location Jeroen de Vries and Frank Ortmanns, with the support of the Dutch cultural attaché in Santiago de Chile, have started to research the possibilities of bringing Wessings work back to Santiago.

Ed van der Elsken – Tokyo Symphony

Tasks: Project manager and curator

In the last years of his life Ed van der Elsken worked on what should have been his audiovisual magnum opus: Tokyo Symphony. The installation was meant to be his homage to Japan – a land that had embraced him personally as well as as a photographer and author.
The installation was never finished due to his early death at age 60. It was thought that the collection of 1,600 images, which is currently stored at the Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam, was all that remained of this ambitious project. In 2007, researcher Frank Ortmanns discovered five audiotapes belonging to the project. Fascinated by this missing piece of the puzzle, Ortmanns approached Paradox to discuss the possibility of posthumously realizing Tokyo Symphony. Taking into account Van der Elsken’s fascination with AV technology, it was concluded that a contemporary approach to this installation would be most appropriate. In other words: to make an installation as if Van der Elsken were still alive. Read More »

Theo Niekus – Spectator

Tasks: Curator, Soundtrack design, digital production, project manager (comissioned by Paradox // http://www.paradox.nl)

In his project Spectator photographer Theo Niekus focuses on the street life in Amsterdam’s consumer centre. The area, roughly between Central Station, Rembrandt Square and Leidse Square, is a place where tourists and locals mix in what often looks like a desperate attempt to shop for anything edible and to be entertained by the act of buying. The hectic behaviour, the density of people and the overall ugliness feels apocalyptic, reminding the viewer of a 16th-century Brueghel painting. Read More »
